on the baby belly (13 weeks)...

13 weeks.

So, I'm currently thirteen weeks pregnant. It's hard to put into words the relief that washes over me as I realize I have reached the end of the first trimester. The "safe zone", so to speak. I feel like I can finally stop holding my breath and realize that, yes, this is really happening. And I'm going to be just fine.

We had another ultrasound on Thursday and we were able to see the little peanut floating around in there, moving about and such. Seeing that tiny, flickering heartbeat was enough to take my breath away.

I can't even tell you how thankful I feel for this whole situation. This tiny baby. So, so thankful. I'm definitely not taking any of it for granted and am attempting to soak up every new experience and shining moment.

To give a summary of my first trimester:

Symptoms: In the second month I had a few weeks of nausea in the mornings, but it was very mild and went away within a couple hours every day. However, I will apparently catch any godforsaken cold that is floating around the universe. I was sick for 3 weeks with a head cold in January, I had pink-eye right after that and for the past week I've been coughing up a lung. (Who would have thought I would be so susceptible to illness when I am taking better care of myself than I ever have?) Aside from that, the only side effect of pregnancy that has been difficult to deal with is the complete lack of energy. Oh, and the fact that this baby has rendered my bladder the size of a cashew.

Weight gain: I've actually yet to gain any weight (even though my belly seems to continue to grow). I know that much of it has to do with the fact that I haven't had much of an appetite, I'm eating much better when I do eat, I'm no longer drinking delicious alcoholic beverages, and I'm exercising more than I did before the pregnancy (walking during my lunch breaks at work). I've lost 8 lbs. and I guess at this point I'm ready to start gaining. (It has been rather nice losing the extra fluff before I begin to take on the shape of a blueberry, though.)

Movement: Nothing yet. The other night I was in bed willing myself to fill something for a good thirty minutes, but I know I'm rushing it. I'm just so eager!

Maternity clothes: My older sister is basically my hero and has stocked my closet with maternity clothes (she works at a maternity clothing store which is the greatest ever). I can still fit into all my regular clothes, but I've definitely preferred dresses and leggings throughout the week. I'm quite ready for my belly to pop and looks like more than bloating, but I guess this is the first week that I've felt that it's started to look like a legitimate baby bump. Hurrah!

Miscellany: The biggest decision Jay and I recently made was to stay in our one-bedroom duplex instead of making the move to a bigger place. There is a lot of reorganizing that needs to be done, but I think it's definitely possible. As it is, our rent is very expensive ($1150/month...I know, everyone who doesn't live in Southern California is peeing their pants right now) and the idea of raising it by even a few hundred dollars gives me hives. So, we're going to try and make it work. If anything, I'm excited to reorganize and redecorate...and stay in our cozy little duplex for the next year or so.

I'm looking forward to the second trimester. If it means that I get my energy back, that will be the greatest thing in humanity. There's only so long I can lay on the couch watching Grey's Anatomy on Netflix, going to bed at 8:30. (Not that it hasn't been delightful beyond all reason, having an excuse to be incredibly lazy. I've embraced my inner couch potato.)

13 weeks.

Hello, there bump. Happy to see you.

  5. You look great! We used to pay 1350 for a 2 bedroom apartment. Rent is absurd in some cities.

  6. Oh, I am so excited for you! I am so excited to watch you go on this journey. I think that watching other people who are pregnant helps me wrap my mind around the fact that I will be a mother someday (in the very FAR future :)) and that there is nothing to fear.

    Lovely little bump, so precious.

You look beautiful! Wonder if you know the sex yet...hint.hint.
That's great though that you're deciding to stay in your duplex (don't you love that word?) instead of getting something bigger right away. Very smart of you.

  16. My shrinking bladder was one of the first signs I was pregnant - it was the size of a cashew when I was at 5 weeks. You look amazing :D Congrats!

  24. Hooray for the baby bump! I'm currently 26 weeks pregnant, and when I made it to 13 weeks I was SO relieved. Just for a comparison, after willing the baby to move for ages, I finally felt her move distinctly right before I hit 19 weeks (but had been feeling flutters that I didn't realize were movements for about a week). But more importantly, hooray for you and your beautiful peanut!

  35. So cuuuuuuuute! I love these baby bump pics of yours! I'm so excited to follow along through your experience of being pregnant. Haha, I live in Southern California too and I know what you mean about the rent. ;) Whenever I tell my family how much our rent is...well. Haha. Let's just say my parents mortgage on their 4 BEDROOM HOUSE is several hundred dollars LESS than our rent. Sheesh. Haha. But anyways. Yay on exciting new life changes! <3

  36. You're beautiful!

I'm so happy to hear that you're staying put because I think a lot of people forget that for the first one year or so, the baby doesn't really need much space (s/he'll be attached to you and Jay for much of that time!). I hope you'll share pictures of the house rearrangement, of upcoming belly pics, and I love hearing about the journey too.

  40. I don't know about other women, but I have not been able to stop worrying even after I reached the second trimester. I think my belly is growing and I think I might be feeling some flutters...but maybe not. It's crazy how anxious I get in between doctor's appointments!

Anyway, you've reached a huge milestone and I'm so happy for you! Yay!

  55. Hello there!
I'm new to your blog. Your brother-in-law, Mark, and I are friends.
He introduced me to your blog because a conversation I had with him a week or so ago reminded him of your entry in which you talked about finding your wedding dress. lol
In any event, I found reading your blog quite heartwarming and it touched my spirit!
Congratulations on the beautiful blessing God has granted you and Jay, both!
I pray that God will continue to shower your lives with His blessings and that you have a healthy pregnancy!
