on a cookie party & being a hostess...
On Thursday evening, I decided to host my first tiny get-together at the duplex. (Actually, any get-togethers at the duplex will be tiny in nature. Any more than six people would be borderline claustrophobic.) Here's the thing about entertaining: I am kind of obsessive compulsive, and for the three hours leading up to guests arriving I am kind of a monster. At one point I even railed on my poor husband after he wore his shoes through the kitchen after I had finished cleaning it.
"If there is even one tiny fragment of dirt on those shoes I will cut you, SO HELP ME GOD."
I wish I could be one of those effortless hostesses, the ones who are calm and collected, the ones who have signature cocktails and tablecloths that aren't made of plastic. The ones who don't worry about whether or not someone is going to notice if they dusted the picture frames. The ones who make cookies from scratch and actually own an electric mixer. The ones who don't make their husbands wonder why they married them when they go on cleaning rampages.
But, you know. I am me. And how is one expected to improve her hostess skills without any practice?
In any case, the evening was ridiculously delightful and I was left wondering, "Why the heck don't I do this more often?" Everything worked out just perfectly. The three girls I had over are some of the most lovely people in my life, and I couldn't think of a better way to spend some time together during the holidays. We ate two entire bags of white cheddar popcorn (well, it was only natural), drank wine, ate about as many cookies as we decorated, listened to some seriously intense Christmas music, and giggled to our hearts content.
I need more of these things in my life. It's official.
And to be completely honest, setting up the table was too much fun. A few posts ago, several people recommended placing ornaments in a bowl (to replace my out-of-season fake pumpkins). And to this idea I must say: WHERE HAVE YOU BEEN ALL MY LIFE? Seriously, guys. Such a sweet and inexpensive idea! (And pretty. Let's not forget the pretty.)
Also, when I was at Michaels the other day, I noticed that all the Martha Stewart baking supplies were 50% off. Um, hi? I was all over that mess. I tend to enjoy the idea of being matchy-matchy, and picked up napkins, paper plates, a tablecloth, and even a couple decorative icings for super cheap. (Oh, Martha. I love you. Let's run away together and make tables pretty every day of our lives.)
I'm also the proud owner of a new set of adorable holiday dishes! (I call them my "china" because I'm apparently not classy enough to own real china, nor do I have a china cabinet even though it would make me feel much more distinguished than I am.) I was thrilled my aunt thought to ask me if I wanted the set before sending it away to Goodwill! It is seriously perfect. I'm in love with the holly pattern.
So, long story short: cookie decorating parties are the greatest ever, being a hostess ended up being quite lovely, I need to stop buying white cheddar popcorn because I gain weight just thinking about it, the holiday season is warming my soul this year, I need to buy a china cabinet, and orange sweet rolls are pretty much the greatest breakfast out there. True story.

that table is so lovely! i'm sure you come across as an effortless hostess, even if you don't feel like one inside :) (plus I'm pretty sure those 1950s hostesses that come to mind when we think of "effortless" were actually just drunk on their third gimlet and not actually aloof about everything!)
ReplyDeleteAw, all of those photos are so pretty! I LOVE the Christmas dishes!
ReplyDeleteOMG! The holiday china is ADORABLE! I can't believe your aunt was going to give it away to Goodwill!
ReplyDeleteCongrats on your success!! =D I am doing a cookie party tonight! =D lil to the BF's knowledge I am about to become a mad woman in about one hour! =D
ReplyDeleteeverything look gorgeous! I always think I should throw parties too, and i just never do :( I love those teacups! I actually collect them. I have like 13 :)

ReplyDeleteHoliday hosting is the best! Last year I threw my first "grown-up" party and invited the whole extended family, so I can totally relate on the obsessive cleaning!!
ReplyDeleteAnd the holly china is super cute!
How cute and creative are you! I love Martha Stewart, too. :)

And I cannot wait to own my own duplex {or house} so that I can throw lovely parties with ornaments in bowls and Martha Stewart covered tables!!!
Sounds like so much fun! And the photos are adorable.
ReplyDeleteSO CUTE. The thing about entertaining is; the more you do it, the less ocd you become, because you realize what is worth freaking out over ;)
ReplyDeletewhat is your recipe for the orange sweet rolls? they look so good :D
ReplyDeleteYour blog is my happy place.
ReplyDeleteI love your table - what a fantastic idea to have ornaments as the centerpiece!
ReplyDeleteYour table setting is seriously gorgeous and so festive!! Drinking wine, baking cookies, why can't we live closer?
ReplyDeleteSo AWESOME! Love your table. I too snatched up those Martha Napkins and a table cloth for a little neighborhood potluck last weekend. :-) And now I'm going to steal your ornaments in a bowl idea.
ReplyDeleteLike everyone else, I absolutely LOVE your table setup!! The ornaments in the bowl are just the right touch!

ReplyDeletefirst, this is my first time commenting, so...hi :)
ReplyDeletesecond, table looks loverly--chartreuse-ish ornaments = not surprising
third, score on the holiday "china." it's perfect.
i don't think there's a hostess in this world that is 100% "calm and collected". it's practically impossible!
ReplyDeletei just had a slumber party with 10 girlfriends friday night, and was frantically running around trying to get everything set up. my boyfriend insists on buying a ridiculous amount of holiday decorations that do not match 100% with everything else. i hated that not everything matched. i can't wait until we can afford to have everything matching!
How fun! And Pretty!!! =) I love the cookie decorating idea! I may just have to steal that next year...
ReplyDeleteYou know, one of my "resolutions" for next year is to spruce up our condo and then host more get-togethers. Like one every couple of months. Because, as you said, despite the stress and worry, they're always fun and so worth it! I'm glad you had a nice little party. You took gorgeous pics.
ReplyDeleteYour table decoration is so adorable! Can you come to my house and decorate? Please!!!
ReplyDeleteThat is absolutely wonderful! I'm sure you were a very gracious and lovely hostess. The table spread it amazing and festive.
ReplyDeleteI really want to have get togethers like this with my girls. Very sweet holidays dishes! Glad you inherited them :)
hostess with the mostess! love it. everything turned out perfectly.
ReplyDeleteYour site looks awesome!
ReplyDeleteAlso this post made me cry. I don't even know why. I think it's because I want pretty holiday dishes and friends. I'm pretty sure that's it.
Oh my goodness! Your table! AH! Love it!
ReplyDeleteLike you, I want to be an effortless hostess, too, but I think that's something that takes practice. And lots of alcohol. We'll get there eventually.
And I love your Christmas dishes!
Super cute table!! And LOOOOVE oragne sweet rolls!
ReplyDeleteyou know, if we could have a party like this during Vegas 2010, that would be pretty fantastic and take the event to the next level (what comes after Epic? I'm not sure!).
ReplyDeleteLovely table.
I want to come next time, k!?
Ah, these photos are amazing! Such beautiful decorations! NIce work. I'd love to have a place I feel I can entertain in.
ReplyDeletei love your table decorations!! so so cute!! i vote next party i have you come help me decorate, yes please! :)
ReplyDeleteThe table decorations are absolutely lovely!
ReplyDeleteThose perfect hostesses? They don't work a 9-5. Or they function on less than 4 hours of sleep each night. Either way, the general population doesn't fall into that category - so, they are the oddballs, not us. :-) And I love your hand-me-down China! It's adorable.
ReplyDeleteI have a bowl of ornaments in front of me and I love them! They make my house look oh so festive!
ReplyDeletethis is pretty much the most adorable thing i've ever seen. all of it. gorgeous. you're amazing. :)
ReplyDeleteI love to entertain and my guidelines are very simple for myself.
ReplyDelete1. Don't stress! I feel like the guests get stressed if I am.
2. Do what YOU like. Sometimes I would get annoyed when people would say things like "wow, you really went all out" (why that would bother me, I don't know. I'm self-conscous I guess). Now, if I feel like "going all out" I do it because it makes ME happy, if I decide to order pizza and use paper plates? Same idea.
3. You don't have to have everything. I used to think "well I dont have enough room for" or "I dont have matching X" Improvise! People have more fun when its a little more relaxed in this regard anyway
4.For nights when you feel like doing it but don't want to have to clean too much, have that group of people that DOESNOT care if there are dustbunnies and mail strewn about, who just love to see you and have a great time!
Lovely! Your life is so pretty. :)
