on our road trip: day one...

first stop on the roadtrip!

Coming at you live, from a shoddy little hotel room in Beaver, Utah! (For the record, I'm not sure if Jay is attempting to flash a gang sign or a peace sign in this photo. So, take what you want from that one.)

Our first day on the road has been absolutely wonderful. We ended up driving for over seven hours, but it didn't feel that long at all. Driving though Utah has been the very definition of gorgeousness. (Okay, so, maybe I just created a definition. Don't judge me.) We even took a detour up a mountain road to see some sort of landmark - only to reach the gate at the top of the mountain, which apparently was filled with four feet of snow. We could go no further without snowshoes or sled dogs. We made the best of it by taking a ridiculous amount of photos, and breaking in my non-boots/moccasins/flats by tromping through the crunchy snow.

The cold isn't as bad as I'd assumed it would be, either. Of course, as my hand dove into a pile of snow (because I had to take a photo of my hand filled with snow) I may or may not have screamed and wailed, "SWEET MOSES, I FORGOT HOW COLD SNOW IS!" I swear, fourteen-year-old me would totally be judging present-day-me right now.

We arrived at our hotel a little while ago, and although I'm not able to share any photos with you yet, I wanted to take a fun little Photo Booth photo to satisfy my need. So, there you have it! We'll be here the rest of the evening and leave for Salt Lake City in the morning.

On a sidenote, I swear this hotel has chicken candles or something, because the sweet aroma of chicken has been wafting through the entire building, and I can hardly stand it. Or maybe one of our neighbors just needs to share their feast. Mmmm, chicken.

Just so all of you are aware, I'm going to be disabling anonymous commenting from here on out. I apologize if this prevents any of you lovelies from commenting - but please know that you can feel free to email me if you have something to share. I just have a low tolerance for some people who feel the need to be rude beyond all reason. Thank you for understanding!

  1. Makes me want to go on a road trip! Last night I watched a travel special about a place called Coral Bay about 10 hours drive from where I live - I am soooo road trippin next holiday :) Dolphins, swimming, a beach made entirely of tiny white shells, and luxury tents that look more like fabulous beachfront condos. Hmm...thanks for the inspiration!

  5. Fun..I've been reading your blog but never comment.

Glad you are in UTAH, my home town.

I totally agree with RUDE commenters, I've had a recent deal with that too - I don't understand why people need to be rude....if you don't have anything nice to say then move on.

    Hope you enjoy your trip!

I have yet to go on a road trip with my man :o) We've driven from San Diego to Pasadena & the reverse quite a few times... but that's only 2 hours of drive time. I hope you get free breakfast at the hotel you're staying at... love the ones with waffle makers. Yessss!! Happy weekend.

  11. I didn't expect to see an update so quickly! How fun! And how great is it that you're in Beaver, Utah? That's classic road trip material right there.

Are you taking amazing pictures along the way?? What a bummer that you left your snow shoes at home :)

Have fun, drive safe! Looking forward to more updates!

  14. I really wish Megan and I were about 2 inches tall, so you could stick us in your little coat pocket, and we could experience first hand the times when you scream exclamations like you did while holding the snow. You know, either that, or actually get to hang out IRL. That would be equally awesome.

  20. Aw, Jonathan's family is from Utah! He & I definitely need to take a trip down there soon. I've never been.

I just saw that nasty Anonymous comment that was left in the last post. I've never understood nasty comments. My thing is, if you don't like it, don't look at it & leave! Why waste energy writing a foul comment, when it would take less energy to just walk away... Nevertheless, I think you're right for shutting down the anonymous comments. People have no respect.

I'm loving Jay's gang sign, by the way. ;]

  25. I love little funky hotels like that - road trips just aren't the same without them. Hope you find out where that great smelling chicken is being served!

  26. 1. You know you're important when you have trolls! I mean, Dooce has like 25 billion and she just ignores them. awesome. :)

    2. YAY PHOTO BOOTH! Sometimes when I'm traveling, I take pictures with it, only to be frustrated by its poor quality. Whatever, Photo Booth with toddlers = the best ever.

    3. When Jim Cramer (Mad Money screaming guy) was on the Daily Show this week, he said "shenanigans" several times. It made me giggle, because I know you (and the Pioneer Woman!) use that word a lot, and seeing an old, bald guy say it was funny. I don't know why. It was funny, trust me. Mostly because I didn't understand 99.9% of the financial stuff he was talking about, okay??

    4. DRIVE SAFELY. :) Duh, I know everyone says it, but seriously, do it, okay?
