on work it out weekends (and other shenanigans)...

First of all, I must say that my subconscious treated me better last night, and I didn't not witness any sort of koala massacre while asleep. At this point, I think that the dream was kind of hilarious (due to it's randomness) and actually, it wasn't the weirdest dream I've ever had. The absolute weirdest would have to be the time I dreamt I turned into Bob Saget.

But let's not go there. I don't want to talk about it.

In other news, Valentine's Day ended up being quite lovely. I'm just going to go out on a limb and say that I'm not really a Valentine's Day person. I hate that it's one of those holidays where everyone around you asks, "Well, what did your guy do for you?" It makes me think I should expect more, or something. It makes me think, "Huh. Why didn't Jay buy me a diamond necklace or a new pink cell phone? Should I be expecting a sonnet, too? Why didn't we go out to an expensive steak dinner?" I hate the pressure and the expectations and all of that. Bleh. As it turns out, yesterday went exactly the way I would have wanted it to.

We both worked in the morning, and on my way home I decided to make the drive to Emelio's Beverage Warehouse, AKA: Shady Town, AKA: The Place Where I Avoid Eye Contact in the Parking Lot to Avoid Being Brutalized, to pick up a six pack of Sam Adam's Cherry Wheat for Jay. (It's his favorite, and for some reason, this is one of the only places we can find it. Every time I go there, I also want to shout out, "EMELIOOOO!" Get the reference? No? Moving on.)

When I got home, Jay was there with a fresh vase of flowers and the ingredients to make our favorite meal. Perfect? I think so. Our most recent NetFlix had even arrived that afternoon, so it was a wonderful night in. Honestly, that's just the way I wanted to spend Valentine's Day. (Or any day, for that matter.)

Okay, I'm sure by this point you're all, "Alright, nelly. This isn't a Work it Out Weekends post. You are a liar. I'm leaving now." But, don't worry. I'm getting there.

On the exercise front, things aren't looking so good. I haven't done anything for two weeks. And then yesterday I was watching The Breakup on TV, saw Jennifer Aniston and decided to basically stop eating for the next two weeks. JUST KIDDING. But, really. She is my hero. I want her body. I just don't want to put in all the work that it would take to get there. (Obviously.)

However, I'm slowly getting back into the swing of things, as far as healthy eating. The other day, I went out and bought a bunch of fruit and veggies. I'm not going to lie, I enjoy snacking on fruits and veggies. I will actually choose to snack on something like that as opposed to junk food, but it's just a matter of actually getting around to buying it. (If I don't have something like that available, then it's too easy for me to say, "Left over Christmas chocolates dipped in crunchy peanut butter? Oh, okay. If I must.")

Also, I'm attempting to stop being a cheapskate and decided to start buying more organic foods - especially fruits and vegetables. There are a lot of things that are just entirely too pricey to buy organic, but for the most part, I want to slowly move in that direction. This is where I admit that I have to do this type of shopping without Jay with me. It's too painful for him to pay the extra 12 cents per banana. But I know how it is, because I'm totally like that, too - I just have been learning a lot about the health benefits of buying organic, and am learning that paying a little extra isn't too bad.

I'm not going to do the usual "HURRAH vs. FAIL" list today, considering much of it would end up sliding over to the FAIL side. So, instead, here are my goals for next few weeks:


  1. Use Wii Fit 3-4 times per week.
  2. Run 2-3 times (outside) per week.
  3. Eat 2 pieces of fruit per day.
  4. Shop organic as much as possible.
  5. Drink a ridiculous amount of water.
  6. Stay positive.
  7. Stop watching movies with Jennifer Aniston in them to avoid feeling like a potato.
  8. Find a 5k to sign up for.

What about all of you? Do you shop organic? What are your goals for the next few weeks? Does Jennifer Aniston give you an inferiority complex, too?

  3. I started reading your blog a few weeks ago and I'm not sure if I've commented yet...if not, then I'm delurking right now.

    Your goal list is pretty similar to mine right now. But...I don't have a Wii Fit. I'm trying to get back into running (2-3 times a week) and I want to eat more fruits and veggies, drink more water. I'm also in awe of Jennifer Aniston's body. I have a magazine article where it outlines her yoga routine and I've attempted it, but sadly have failed this far. Maybe this week...

    Love the mellow Valentine's day festivities. We made a homemade pizza and watched episodes of 'The Closer".

    Think I'm gonna do this 5K in May.

    It's a gorgeous course. (Though I know I won't really enjoy the scenery as I'm huffin' and puffin') You should check it out.

  5. umm... Jennifer Aniston gives me such a complex it's not funny. I want her bod as well. LOL! I think I am going to start doing work-it out weekends as well since you threw out the opportunity and since I've been working hard at it!!! LOL!!

  6. You're so brave for signing up for a 5k- I think you have Jennifer Aniston beat in that category!

    I've started buying organic here and there more too - but as we buy more and more I've been trying to make sure that 75% of our groceries come from around the outside of the store not the inner aisles. That means we're buying fresh dairy, veggies, and meats to make meals with and staying away from the inner aisles where the preservatives and junk food lives.

    As for the organic stuff, Google the dirty dozen. Aka the 12 foods you should eat organic. I agree that it is expensive, so we try to eat organic sometimes or at least all natural. I also try to buy organic stuff that I eat all the time, like milk, yogurt, natural pb, and berries.

    Also, we didn't do anything particularly "special" either for V-Day. I hate the pressure and fakeness of it all. :) We had dinner Friday night and laid around doing nada yesterday!

  10. i agree about jennifer aniston!!! i watched that last night too, right after the sweet home alabama that was before it! then prince caspian, the best valentines date ever. =D but yes, i was watching it with girls in my dorms and i was like "i want her body. seriously i am like 5 of her." it didnt help that the night before we saw her in hes just not that into you, which was amazing. but yes, she gives me an inferiority complex too.

  13. I agree that Jennifer Aniston makes me wish I could afford a personal trainer and private chef. However, I do not envy her heartbreak history. Next time you see her, just think of being cheated on by Brad Pitt and dumped several times by John Mayer.

I try to remind myself that she has a personal trainer and gets paid A LOT to look that good but I still end up feeling like a potato. :-) Love your blog - I recently discovered it and very much appreciate your candidness and the fact that I relate to much of what you have to say.     it's nice to get motivation from others and i'm looking forward to a better week myself too. one problem i have is i need to drink more water...seriously!!

    i don't buy organic...maybe i should though. although i notice healthy foods are expensive & expires fast!

  19. i always have to start the week with a list of workout/healthy goals too. and yes, anything with jennifer aniston makes me feel like an awkward, lumpy potato, so you're not the only one.

  22. we eat largely organic and it's killing our pocketbooks :) but we have three kids and i'm 34 and know better! than to eat all those pesticides..we switched to largely whole foods but i have alcohol and chips at home right now :)

  23. My mom never let me read beauty magazines when I was growing up - because she didn't want me to have low self-esteem.

    I think she's totally awesome for that.

    It really, really helped me to not feel totally fat compared to movie stars. :)

  24. Jennifer Aniston is sooo my body idol.. So you know, once they can just superglue my head on her body I'll just continue dreaming.

    Yayyy for a 5K! This week is my "I'm not kidding anymore, we are getting off our butt" week. Today I worked out in the gym in my office (at 3pm.. shhhh.. well it would be a better secret if my cube neighbor didn't get on the treadmill right before me! dude! stealing my machine!) and did weights and the bike. so here's to working out!

Miss Aniston is both a source of pain and pleasure for me; painful in that I feel unhappy about my own body when I see her, but then again it is a pleasure to see someone who looks so nice.... and ditto on not wanting to make the effort... I want to get fit, but I don't really want to enough to do it :)
    I've taken to carrying my small cgild as my main method of exercise now: bannish prams and get fit!!
