on a third year of marriage...

my favorite photo from our wedding.

"A successful marriage requires falling in love many times, always with the same person." (Mignon McLaughlin)

Three years ago, I was sitting in the dark, trying to sleep. I was talking with one of my best friends, in awe of the fact that I was actually getting married in the morning. Is this really happening? Is this real? I was excited and overwhelmed and a million other things all at the same time. I was worrying about the photographer, the way my dress fit, whether or not my hair would turn out. I was second-guessing my decision to do my own make-up and hoped that it wouldn't rain. I wondered if Jay was having trouble sleeping, too.

Three years ago, I was ready to begin my life with the one man who stole my heart like nobody else. I ached for the rest of my life to begin, because I knew he would be the one I was spending it with. I couldn't wait to go to bed next to him every night, and wake up next to him every morning. I knew with every inch of my being that he was the one meant for me.

Three years ago, I wondered what it felt like to be married. Would it be different? Would we argue? Would I be a good wife? What would change, and what would stay the same? I had taken advice and heard stories from person after person. I had listened as people told me I was entirely too young to make a decision like marriage. I knew some people thought it was a terrible decision for us not to live with eachother before saying, "I do." I saw raised eyebrows and heard voices clouded over with cynicism and doubt. Yet, I never doubted my choice for a second. If anything, I couldn't wait to prove them wrong.

Three years ago, I had practiced my new signature hundreds of times. I was ready for the title of "wife". I was ready to have a husband. I was ready to put on the dress, walk down the aisle, cut the cake and drive away to begin the next big adventure in my life.

And now? I can hardly believe that tomorrow marks our third wedding anniversary. I keep thinking, Has it seriously been that long? In some ways it feels like just yesterday, and yet, at the same time, it feels like we've been married forever. It's just one of those things, I guess. In any case, I think that the above quote describes perfectly how I feel about marriage. There are ups and downs, you go through a lot together. But I do believe that the love is always there, and always will be.

I'm just so thankful to be celebrating my anniversary with the man who still makes me feel giddy.

  4. Your reasons for being excited for marriage are exactly the things every person should feel before getting married. They're definitely what I'll base my decision on.

I sincerely wish you two the happiest lifetime together. What a great example of love.

  22. This makes me feel really happy. My parents are kind of unstable and unhappy all the time. I never really get to see anyone who is happy to be married, and this gives me hope for the future. Its good to know it is possible to love someone, just one person, forever.

  34. Hi.. I stalk your blog often and decided to stop lurking and comment. ;)
The part about the doubters and naysayers is much like mine was. My husband and I are coming up on our 1st anniversiray next month. All the negativaty and doubt about being too young and not being ready. I knew I was ready and I love everything about being Kurt's wife.

    Happy Anniversary!

  43. It's crazy to me that you've been married 3 years already!!

Three years ago...I was a junior in college. Probably stressing out over papers to be written and hanging out with my housemates.

And you were getting married. :)

  49. Here's to getting married young when you know you've found your soulmate! When I got engaged at 20, my boss sat me down and gave me a lecture on the "virtues" of living with your significant other before marriage. I tried to explain to him that I didn't really believe in that, and I wasn't worried about it. He thought I was a weirdo.
