on a few happy things...

1. When Jay and I were in Hollywood last night, I totally saw Angel from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. (Yes, I insist on referring to him as "Angel". It's an issue, really.) Jay and I were at some sort of Italian film festival or something, and they had a red carpet there. We seriously weren't expecting to see any celebrities we recognized, but the first one that I saw walking down in front of the photographers was Angel. Ohhh myyy gossshhh. My heart basically stopped beating. I should not be allowed around celebrities. It's official. I grin like a maniac and turn red and become, basically, a twelve-year-old. I was on my tip-toes, staring at him and I swear we made eye contact. It was the greatest moment ever. He walked around and passed within a foot of me, and if I'd had my camera (and if he wasn't being mobbed my a frantic group of tiny, Japanese tourists) I would have totally gone up to him and been completely awkward and said something about how beautiful he was, and most likely drooled on his shoes or something. Have I mentioned that I'm totally unable to be a normal human being around famous people? Ah, well. He was beautiful. That's all I have to say about that.

(Although, I must say that I did find it rude when Jay was looking at the red carped and shouted out, "JOHN MAYER!" And I was all, "WHAAAAT?" and basically peed my pants. And then he just laughed at me and thought it was hilarious. Him and his trickery. Not cool, Jay. Not cool at all.)

2. I was shady, and used two 50% coupons for Michael's today. There are these frames that I've wanted forever, but refuse to pay $14 each for them. At work, we get a whole stack of papers every Sunday - therefore, I have a whole stack of Michael's coupons every weekend. This weekend? It was too tempting. I went to two separate Michael's in order to use them. What is a girl to do in a situation like that, anyway? Seriously. I'm a rule-breaker. I basically own Michael's now. It's great.

3. Today, I bought a sewing machine. I've wanted one for ages, and Target had a great deal on a Singer for $70. Perfect for a beginner for me. (The last time I used a sewing machine I was probably twelve and making a quilt for my American Girl doll, if I remember correctly.) Tonight I successfully threaded the bobbin and all those other shenanigans. It took me forever (and didn't help that I was drinking a glass of wine, either) but I finished my first project: a cozy for our new GPS:

my first project on the sewing machine!

Cute, right? Of course, if you could see the ridiculously terrible stitching, you'd probably judge me. There was even one spot that I ended up having to glue together because it didn't get situated properly. But, oh, well. It's an experience. Soon I'll be making handbags and tuxedos! Watch out, world.

4. As seen above, we finally got a GPS. (Cue the singing angels!) I will still probably freak out while driving, but perhaps it will happen a little less now that I have a kind British man telling me when to exit the freeway. It is all kinds of amazing.

5. I had today off, which was completely wonderful. I don't necessarily get every holiday off of work, so when I get an extra day off during the week, I basically do cartwheels out of pure, unadulterated joy. Today I got so much done: a complete cleaning of the duplex, the aforementioned trips to Michael's, the sewing of the GPS cozy, catching up on my ridiculous reality shows, enjoyed a couple hours at the laundromat, did a bit of decorating and made myself a delicious grilled cheese sandwich (dipped in tomato basil soup, of course).

6. Last week, I finally got around to getting contacts again. I have this irrational fear that I'm going blind, and I freak out whenever I have to have my eyes checked. However, I was tired of remembering to bring my glasses everywhere, and I don't usually like wearing them at all times. So, I made the appointment and once again can see! It's like a miracle whenever I put in my contacts. I love it.

7. I'm happy. I'm in love. I've been married for almost three years. I feel content. We are going on a two-week vacation next month. I have three days off this week. I am finding new things that bring a smile to my face. I'm enjoying a cozy evening to myself. And life is good.

  1. I seriously think I'd knock someone out if they tricked me into thinking that John Mayer was nearby. Too. mean.

But Kyle would do it and then he'd laugh just like Jay did. ;P

  2. Ooh! I wish I saw more celebrities, I'm never at work when they come in. Seriously, Willow (who I know has a real name, but nobody knows who I'm talking about unless I say Willow) from the movie Willow was in our store one day with his wife and I had to find out about it secondhand...I love that movie so so so much and I totally missed it...anyway...moving on.

I'm also pretty jealous of your sewing machine, I've wanted one for a long time...I should check out Target's selection because apparently they have good deals...or maybe I can find a good one secondhand...or something. Anyway, cutest ever cozy! That's amazing for one of your first projects!

P.S. I am always working when the silly basketball celebrities come in, but I never know who they are (except for Shaq, because he's pretty recongnizable).

  3. Is the guy that played Angel the same guy that plays Booth on Bones? Because if so I'm absolutely in love with him.

  4. John Mayer! Hilarous! I love to sew. I started taking lessons when I was 10. I took four years. I love it.

  5. Haha, boys are eeevil and I think Tyler would have done the same thing to me but with Nick Lachey....O.M.G. I'd run over all those japanese tourists to hug and kiss Nick.

  6. Faking a John Mayer sighting might be the worst thing a man can do to a girl. You totally have grounds for divorce.

I made myself an awesome grilled cheese today too! Sadly, no soup. But I used fresh mozzarella and it was amazing!

  7. Celebrity goodness aside, tomato basil soup and grilled cheese. Ohm nom nom.

I can usually handle famous folk encounters. I just awkwardly pretend not to see them. I totally ignored Lou Diamond Phillips last year. He was in town for Hamlet.

Now, were I to cross Johnny Depp's path? Oh, it would not be good.

  9. seriously, i am going to marry angel one day. I've already told my man (of 7 years) that i would never leave him...except for angel. He would never leave me...except for jessica alba. so thats cool, i think i can handle that... :)

  10. I love your blog! You are too fun! I have that whole reality show habit. I have to tell Mr. S. to ignore the reality shows I have DVRed. At least I don't make him watch ALL of them.

  12. I am totally with you on the coupons!
That is too funny :) Why let a perfectly good coupon go to waste? And why pay full price when you don't have to?!

  13. Ok, that GPS cozy is adorable! Congrats on the sewing machine...I think things in the wishcake shoppe are going to kick into high(er) gear pretty soon!

I'm wondering how y'all have 50% coupons at Michaels this week while we "only" have 40% off! I love using coupons and if the Michaels in my city were closer to one another I'd totally try that tricky trick!

Were you by any chance watching The Bachelor?

  14. I’m not going to lie, seeing Angel would probably have left me weeping tears of joy, and my husband at least a little disturbed. What a cool thing for you!!

Your case is so beautiful! Great work – and there are some great tutorials online you can use to play with your technique. I love my sewing machine with a passion & I've only had it for about 4 months.

  15. AH! You saw Angel?? What is his name, anyway? He's also on Bones, where he looks slightly older but just as smokin'. A tad jealous over here!

ok, i'm so glad that you admitted to using 2 coupons at Michaels, i've done the same thing LOL Except I gave one to my husband and made him stand in line & buy this giant letter "S" that i was planning to paint for our living room. he was so annoyed with me LOL!
You and you're sewing machine are going to be so badass! I really need to sit down and figure out how to thread MY bobbin...everytime i've used it TJ has done it for me, Eee!! sadness.

  20. A sewing machine is definitely on the top of my wish list. Congrats on yours.. Oh how I want to be creative & crafty!! AND I refuse to buy anything over a few dollars at Michaels or Bed Bath & Beyond without one of their coupons. It's silly to pay full price when there are millions of coupons floating around.

#5: ME TOO!! Cartwheels, joy, all of it!

    #7: AHHHHH! Love it!
