on a little shop update...

the shop.

I've been working hard to keep the shop stocked, and have come up with several new designs for note cards and felt wallets. It's truly the most gratifying thing, coming up with something in my head and then actually seeing it come out the way I wanted. Right away I'll scurry over to Jay and say, "Look! I just made this! What do you think? Cute?" He's a good cheerleader, for sure. Especially since he's not exactly the kind of guy who is, well, crafty. Sometimes I wish he would compliment a good blanket stitch or ask me where I found such cute rubber stamps, but really? Most of the time a, "Great job, honey!" is good enough for me.

I've been thinking a lot about where I'd like my crafty endeavors to go. I've been thinking about it a lot a lot. At this point, I've decided that I'm really going to go for it, and see where it takes me. Even though I've been incredibly busy with my "real" job and this hectic time of year, I want to put in as much time and effort as I can into my crafts. And it hardly feels like work when I'm creating, anyway. It's what I love. And I'm pretty sure I've expressed my desire to do something like this for a living. Or have I not? I don't know if I've gone into it much, but it is truly my goal. And now, more than ever, I think that maybe it could happen. I've got a ways to go, and have a lot of work to do, but still...part of me keeps thinking, "This could happen." I read stories all the time about creative people who get to do exactly what it is that I dream of doing, and I'm constantly reminded that each of them all had to start somewhere, you know? Everyone has a tiny, little beginning.

When I opened the shop a little over a year ago, I had incredibly humble aspirations. It took me a while to even open it, because I struggled with that little thing called Fear of Failure.

Is anyone going to even buy what I make? Am I charging too much? Is the quality nice enough? What if they send it back because they don't like it? What if, what if, what if?

Since that time, I've definitely grown in my confidence, and also improved the quality of everything I make - which is only natural, since this whole thing has been an incredible learning experience. I've sold over 70 items from my shop, and am absolutely floored when I think about that. And, if anything, this experience has only been more humbling. Although I'm now much more confident in what I'm creating and the brand I'm making for myself, all of this is reliant on the amazing people out there who put in their time and money to shop handmade. The people who support artists and crafters must know that each purchase not only a purchase, but also an encouragement to the person behind it.

So, thank you. To everyone who has encouraged me, supported me and even those who take the time to stop by and browse the shop from time to time. Thank you oh, so much. You're helping me make my own little dream come to life.

  5. Well I'm one of those people who is definitely rooting for you and I'm so delighted to hear that you're going to give your shop all you've got.

This Fear of Failure thing is huge and can really stop people for going for it (eg me). I'm glad you didn't let it stop you, and that you're not letting it limit how far you go with this!

  6. I'm so glad that you're moving forward with your shop with that intention! Your items are *beautiful* and I really admire that you're taking that step.

I'm still finding where my crafty little heart is at, so until I can figure that out I'll be wishing I was in that place too!

  13. i know exactly what you mean. every time i see my total earnings on SnoCap go up by $3.50, it's totally not even about the $3.50. It's like, "Oh dear. Someone liked this enough to buy ALL THE SONGS. AT ONCE." It's a crazy wonderful feeling.

  22. Congrats, my dear.

You are so talented, you deserve it!

I, too, dream of being crafty and living off of creativity. Although I've been crafting forever, it's not even been a MONTH since I opened my Etsy. (And I tend to jump to conclusions quickly. As in: "I love this! I want to do it forever and ever!") I'm honestly surprised I've gotten sales, but every time, it thrills me so!

Now, you have over EIGHTY sales. Amazing. You rock.

(And, Mike is the SAME WAY when I show him something new. Supportive. It's cute - he says the same thing every time I come bounding over to him, beaming with excitement.)

  23. Wow! Congrats on your sales record! That is SOOOO cool! And I saw you twittered that you made more in one day from etsy sales than from a day at your regular job. That is amazing! You are so cool! You are totally living the dream! And of course, I love the wallet you made me! YAY! It's so adorable!! Dang, I wanna be like you! Jealous. :) We're all so proud!
