on the shirt dress...

This entry could also be called: "on discovering how I am white beyond all human decency; I shan't refer to myself as a Southern Californian ever again, especially after seeing this photo, for realsies..." or "on how I basically want to become Blake Lively because, although I think that her show is smut and is ruining the next generation of Americans, she's always walking around wearing the most adorable shirt dresses in real life and, dude, the girl can pull off a shirt dress like nobody's business and P.S. I WANT HER LEGS AHHH..."

But I couldn't fit all of that in the title. Which is a little disappointing.

Well, anyway.

I was thrilled to find this baby on sale for $17 when I went to Old Navy last week. I tried it on, showed Jay, and asked him if he liked it.

me: "Is this...normal? Really. Like, could I wear this out without someone judging me? Do you think? Because I like it, but then I don't know if I really like it, but then I really want to like it, and it makes me feel cool. So? What do you think?"
Jay: (most likely wondering if this is one of those 'does this make my butt look big' questions) "Um. Sure. Depends where, I guess."

So, I bought it. And actually? I love it. It's the most comfy thing you'll ever put on, dress-wise. And, dude. It has pockets. A dress with pockets! Sign me up! I do think I want to get another belt to wear with it, though. Just for another option. Because the last time I remember wearing a loopy belt like this, I was about ten years old, and I'm pretty sure I was wearing it with pink jean shorts, or something.

And although I don't have legs for days or a golden California tan, I've decided that I don't have to be Blake Lively to pull off the shirt dress. (I do secretly wish to wake up one morning, however, to discover I've taken on her exact form. The girl is a goddess. It's highly irritating.)

So, what have you ladies and gentleman been wearing lately? Any trends you want to try? Any luck waking up with Blake Lively's gams magically attached to your body? (And I mean that in the least promiscuous way.)

  1. I totally saw a woman wearing this dress today and thought of another blogger (legallyheidi.com) who was so excited to buy it! It's very very cuuuute.

  2. Adore. And $17? Holy smokes!

A trend I'd like to try: giant monster rings. Sure, they're a little ridiculous, but I think they could be cute with simple, sophisticated outfits.

  3. I wish I could wake up looking like Blake Lively too. The dress is adorable!

I am very excited for fall and all the fall trends: purples, long necklaces....

  4. I love the dress, it's super cute! I think it'd look awesome with some wedge shoes. Just an idea.

  6. That dress is totally cute. I've contemplated the shirt dress and I'm not sure that I could pull it off either, but maybe I'll just have to try it.

I live in Nevada where it's pretty hot and sunny like Cali and I'm pretty darn pale. Darn my genes and this ridiculously transparent skin of mine.

  7. Ooh, very cute! You definitely pull this style off. I love those Old Navy deals!

  8. I think it looks super cute on you! I really like the shoes you have paired with it also. And I actually think the belt goes well with it. But switching it up with another belt would also be cute...and would create a new look with just a simple change! =)

  9. I too have been looking for a shirtdress very similar to that. Alas prob in white as it's spring not fall here. Too back there's also no Old Navy. Darn.

I plan on wearing a wide belt. The kind that's kinda elasticy and you wear to cinch in your waist. They generally have a neat buckle or something. Haven't found the perfect one yet, but I'm looking. Just as a suggestion if you wanted!

  10. i love pockets! loving the dress on you, so cute!

i am into tunics and have been wanting to try leggings. but my calves are huge! so i guess that will have to wait.

have you ever tried spray-on tan? my roommate was in a wedding last weekend and she tried it for her white legs (since the dress came below her knees, her legs were still utterly exposed!) she said it worked pretty well :) didn't even notice!

  11. The dress looks good on you!

My style lately has been more of a 'as long as I can afford it' type. And practical things. tops in bright colours with corduroy jackets/ cotton vests and jeans is my style at the moment. And my Lowlands Festival hoodie which I currently live in. So comfy and warm.

  14. The dress is totally cute - especially with the gladiator style sandals, that ups the chic-factor tenfold. Enjoy!

  15. I bought a shirt dress from Macy's in a blue color with big buttons down the front. It's ADORABLE.

And was only $24. From Macy's, that's a steal. I also bought some shiny red peep toe wedges to go with it...but they were TOO SMALL. It was quite the travesty to admit to myself. I kept them in my bedroom for a few weeks, constantly trying them on, trying to convince myself they weren't THAT uncomfortable.

But for $30? Call me cheap, but I need AMAZING shoes.

I'm going to do a post soon about shoes and HOW THE HECK you can make your feet not feel like you're torturing them when wearing cute shoes. Please stop by when I do & tell me your secrets! ;-)

  16. Love.

I'm a fan of the shirt dress as well. They are just so easy! I bought a pink one from Old Navy last year and I get more compliments on it than anything else in my closet.

Also? I'm sort of in love with gladiator sandals. Not the ones Rhianna has been sporting that end three inches away from her crotch- but normal ones. I feel so... mysterious when I wear them.

And no, I don't know why 'mysterious' is what I feel, but it is, so I accept it.

  17. I love this, you look adorable.
And, clearly, Blake Lively is some type of alien or something. Her body is TOO GOOD.

  19. I don't know if it gets cold there, but in wintertime, I wear mine with think brown tights and boots and a wide brown belt.
I too am pale(Scottish though, everyone in Scotland is pale), and this is my shirt dress solution. My other way to wear it with brown cords, a cream long sleeved t-shirt under, and the above wide brown belt.

I have shirt dresses in about 5 colours, they go with everything!

    p.s. i love your sandals!!!

  20. I had a version of this in college and it was SO comfy. It looks great on you too!!

  21. LOVE it.

I love dresses and am always looking for excuses to wear them. My favorite dress "look" right now is the sleeveless one with a V in the front AND back (like... um... blake lively's in the season premier of gossip girl...) with an empire waist and a super flowy skirt. any color would do. I don't have one, but I WANT.

also, i love SCARVES. i'm waiting for it to cool down just *this much* more so i can start building my scarf collection and wearing the regularly. and this is minnesota. i shouldn't have to wait too much longer...

  22. loves the dress! i think it would be sooo cute with a bright yellow belt or a metallic silver one.

i can't wait to bust out all of the scarves i bought from old navy when they were $6!

  27. Oooh love the shirt dress!!! I'm a fan!

  28. So, I never tried on the shirt dress style because I assumed it would look like I just rolled out of bed after a one night stand and didn't feel like changing.

    I was wrong.

You look fantastic in it! I love when my assumptions are wrong. :)

  29. Girl, you are loooking soooo the cute! Love it! And remember to work the pale-ness! cuz I def have to! Grrrr I'm so annoyed about that dress tho cuz I saw it as soon as it came out a month or two ago but I didn't think it was worth plunking down 30 bux for ... but then when you twittered about the dress being 17.50 I meant to get my butt to Old navy, but then when I did - its back to 30 bux again! WHYYYY?! what a tease! and now you make me want the dress again but I want it for 17 not 30- what a dilemma!

  30. lovely shirt. :] it suits you perfectly, unlike me, who can't really pull off the shirt/dress look.

& you know what I've been wearing lately; it's plastered all over the pages of my blog. ;]

  31. It's so cute! I can't pull off a shirt dress...I'm too short and it just ends up looking like I forgot my pants. :P

  32. I loove dressed and skirts with pockets! Earler in the summer I bought a fitted bdark blue skirt from Jacob that had pockets and I wear it ALL the time. And I put my hands in the pockets just because I can. The dress looks gorgeous on you! And you look gorgeous in it.

I would love if you could show us how you would dress it up for the fall/winter.

  35. you're so cute with your wardrobe pics! as for gg... sooooooooooo smutty. at first i had a bit of a hate on for it, but am now addicted. although it terrifies me in having children, because i could NOT deal if my child watched this show. i cringe at the thought that teenagers are watching! i figure it's either my age showing, or i'm onto the fact that it's a teenage adult rated r soap.
