on crap days and making the most out of one...

I had such a crap day yesterday. Hardly any sleep, way too early for a disagreement, stomach ache, and some guy making me feel like a complete tool. All I wanted to do was scream out "EFF!" and run home to go to bed. Straight up cried in my car on the way home from work. (Thankfully the rediculously large sunglass trend is still in full force, so people could only see half of my crumpling face.) But then, to add insult to injury, I couldn't even get a good cry in edgewise. I'm one of those people who sometimes, at the end of a stressful week and/or day, just needs to cry it out. And I couldn't even do that, yesterday. I felt like Cameron Diaz in The Holiday. (Haven't seen it? Well, do. It makes me happy.)

At that point, all I wanted to do was go home and make some chocolate chip cookie dough and watch Friends. Or eat a spoonfull of peanut butter and listen to Hanson. Or watch a Lifetime movie wearing all the scarves I own. (Not sure how that last one is comforting, but it sounded good in my head.)

I decided to make the most of my day, anyway. I'm a whole new me, remember? (Oh, wait. Have we not gone over that? Well, I'm attempting to be more positive and/or productive. It's a good thing.)

I went to pick up my ring from the jeweler, and walked away with the shiniest most glorious ring of my life. Dude, I should take the thing weekly if this is what it's going to come back looking like, all shiny and scratch-free and sparkly beyone words:

Can I get some props on the sweet photo, too? Holla. I love how it turned out. Anyway, after picking up the ring, I decided I was craving some craft time, and went to buy supplies to make some little marble magnets. I've been wanting to make these for ages, and it just just about getting to it and buying the supplies and having the motivation to sit down and try. So, I bought the supplies and then headed to the grocery store to get some goodies for dinner. I couldn't decide what to make. I had four things swirling around in my head (baked macaroni, lazagna, spaghetti and taco casserole) but finally decided on spaghetti, with garlic bread. I rarely actually make make a dinner that is beyond one of those fab skillet meals or boxed "complete" meals where you don't even need brain cells for it to come out decently. So, I decided that I could be slightly more domestic than that, and have a nice dinner waiting for the husband when he came home.

And everything turned out lovely. I made several magnets and it was too much fun. Absolutely simple beyond words, and they look so impressive! The first ones are a little glue-y around the ends (as I wasn't sure exactly how much glue to put on) and the paper doesn't exactly match the magnet (here's where a hole punch would come in handy), but I love them just the same. What a great gift idea, no? Here's how they turned out:

Jay came home and dinner was ready (I'm so not good at multitasking while cooking, by the way. I kept running in circles wondering when I should start the bread because when will the noodles be done and will the sauce be warm yet and should I sautee the bell peppers and onions yet and on and on and on.). He said it was great, and I don't think it was too bad myself. We ate dinner at the table, finished a bottle of wine (weee!) and then, being the classy folks we are, watched the reuntion show of Rock of Love on Vh1.

It was a good night. And my crap day turned out to be not so crappy after all.
